While a recently purchased New England style cottage was classically charming, the newly acquired residence somehow just didn’t match the modern sensibilities of the owner. The existing residence had demure spaces, limited views, and nothing seemed to flow; and while the bones of the house seemed promising it simply was just too confining to be comfortable. And while we all agreed that the residence had good bones, it was quickly understood that some radicle procedures would be necessary. The first step was to rework the floor plan, the changes focused on a central spine that would organize the program and allow for the main spaces to be revealed. The second step was to add a bit of square foot to help open the house, this created some accessible outdoor spaces and a more classically modern approach to the exterior could be developed around an indoor/outdoor approach. Properly appointing the residence was the final step, with the introduction of a neutral textured pallet, elegant livable furnishings, and a backdrop of cabinetry the home was able to realize a more modern sensibility. In the end, all of these moves, helped to reveal the essence of the home; now not confined by tradition, the home could actually breathe, free to bring the outdoors in while still maintaining the warmth and charm of the original.
