The client approached us upon the purchase of their new home and asked that we look at the feasibility of opening the home to take advantage of the beautiful ocean views just beyond; but beyond this they wanted to see if the house could be moved from its traditional nature to something that was more modern to reflect their own personal sensibilities. While opening the rooms to take advantage of the views was structurally challenging, the planning was relatively straight forward, the more challenging aspect was how to create a more modern and beachy rendering of the home with a framework that was traditional in its very nature. The answer ultimately lay in three aspects:· Simplifying the material palette with an emphasis on light and air· Furnishing the home with clean lines and simplified forms· Developing an art program, that while in balance with the residence, could push the envelope toward the clearly modern It was by balancing these three aspects that we were able to create a residence that was in keeping with the classic form of the home but was open, peaceful, and modern.
