Searching for a new vacation home the owners fell in love with this quirky 1970’s piece of architecture. Wanting to keep the original, along with its inimitable character, the goal was to maintain the eccentric nature of the residence while acknowledging that it needed some serious love. The design began with careful consideration around the existing courtyard. While the “smart” move would have been to fill this open void, the decision was made that this cavity could be utilized more eloquently. Ultimately this restraint helped to create the heart of the home, with an outdoor living room filling the space and cascading planters blurring the line between indoors and out.
Internally the desire was to capture the unique California lighting - creating a warm and sophisticated summer home. This intent was accomplished through a punched metal stair, connecting the loft above to the master suite with filtered light reaching down to the exposed foundation below. The material palette then played upon this goal with the use of contrasts: rough against refined and warm against cool. Through these contrasts, and borrowed views, a home was created that not only connected one to the ocean but also to family and friends
